It is nice to sense the glories of spring with flowers starting to bloom, plenty of sun and being able to get outdoors. Besides all of the obvious signs of spring, I would like to call your attention to April 11th. This is a day for anyone who eats.
Saturday, April 11th is a day designated: “READ YOUR LABELS DAY”. This is a day for each of us to be more thoughtful about reading every label on any food or other product we have in our homes. If we don’t read labels, we are eating and living in the dark. We all know not reading ingredients is hazardous to our health. So carry your magnifying glass on April 11th to read all the fine print and labels on food products, household cleaners and skin products. Remember just because the front of a package says “natural”, it does not mean it is safe. The front side of packaging is for marketing and sales, not healthy nutritional value.
Here are the top 10 additives to avoid:
- High Fructose Corn Syrup
- Hydrolyzed protein
- Autolyzed yeast
- Monosodium glutamate
- Brominated vegetable oil
- Potassium bromate
- BHA and BHT
- Trans fats
- Artificial colors
And what is put on your skin goes into your body:
While you are reading labels don’t forget to read labels on your skin care products. Avoid over the counter brand name synthetics, chemical based skin products, soaps, cleansers, lotions, etc. For example, stop using skin care products with hydroquinone, mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate (sls). This is just to name a few. See my post on Evaluating Skin Care Products for more information.
