Take Time to Watch the Leaves Turn

Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.

September 22 marks the first day of autumn. Some dread this time of year because it means summer is over and the harsh winter weather is right around the corner—at least if you live in the Midwest. But this quote by the late Elizabeth Lawrence, a Southern gardener and writer, reminds me of the possibility of this season. Fall offers us a colorful window to sit and take in Nature’s work, to revel in the beauty that truly is all around us.

This time in the silence is also a great opportunity for self-reflection. During this time you can identify your values. By getting clear on what’s most important to you, you can then take that into your daily life and live your values. Take a good look at your schedule—what’s getting your time and attention? Does it support what you value?

What I value most are:

  1. Quiet time
  2. Walking
  3. Eating “right,” which for me is doing my best to stay off sugar

When I do those three things consistently I feel better and can move through my day with ease and grace. By making them a priority—which is really making me a priority—I am better able to tend to other things that demand my time, attention and energy. I’m also more willing to cut myself some slack and determine that some things really can wait until tomorrow.

So with fall upon us, consider these tips:

  1. Shift out of autopilot. Become aware. Be in the present moment.
  2. Set intentions for your day—not just a lengthy “to-do” list but something broader. For example, “My intention for my day is ‘peace.’”
  3. Be flexible. Allow the day to unfold without expectation. Be grateful for whatever comes your way—yes, even the tough stuff.
  4. Make lists. Doing so can take things off your mind and open up space for being in the present moment.

And, of course, take time to watch the leaves turn.
